Chapter Ten

Beckett pushed open the door to his father’s hospital room. Cora would be furious that he’d left without her. But he needed to see his dad alone for a few minutes. He’d return and get her after they’d talked.

Chester was sitting up in bed, a little pale, but otherwise seemingly okay. When he smiled, both sides of his mouth curled upward.

“Good morning, Dad. You’re looking much better.”

“Beckett, hello. Where’s Cora?”

Beckett clenched his teeth. Dad would rather see the woman he’d only known a few weeks than his son of thirty years. “She’s still at home. I’ll go back and get her in a little bit. She hasn’t slept much in a couple of nights. I didn’t want to disturb her this morning. Besides, I want to talk to you in private.”

“I need to speak with you as well. Do you mind if I go first? I get so tired and I’m anxious to get this off my chest.”

“Of course. Go ahead.” Beckett took a seat next to the bed and prepared himself. Had his father noticed his fascination with Cora? Was he about to warn him off?

“Yesterday after you got back from the beach, I asked Cora to marry me.”

Beckett had heard the expression “hit me like a freight train” but, until this moment, he’d never experienced it. Thankfully, logic returned. No way would Cora accept his father’s offer. Beckett had seen the way she looked at him. Hell, they’d shared the most passionate kiss of his life in the car following the picnic. Then almost repeated it when they’d parted at her bedroom door after returning from the hospital. They’d held each other in the waiting room. She’d never agree to marry his dad when she melted in Beckett’s arms. Would she?

“What did she say?” Beckett asked.

“She said ‘yes’, of course.” Chester almost crowed the news.

Beckett now knew what it felt like when the bottom fell out of his world. He’d been too young when his mother died to really know what was about to happen. But the news of his father’s engagement shattered the illusions he’d built up around Cora. And any fantasies he’d had about a relationship between him and her.

Before he could even question the state of his father’s mental health, Chester continued. “But now I have something to ask you. I want you to promise me you’ll look after her if I’m unable to.”

Beckett’s gaze flicked to the IV drip. What kind of drugs was his father on? Did he have any idea what he was asking?

“Dad—”

“No, hear me out. Cora’s special. She’s had a hard life, and I can’t bear to think of leaving her alone in the world without a protector. If something were to happen, if I have another stroke and I can’t recover… I need to know she’ll be cared for.”

Beckett forced a smile. “Dad, nothing is going to happen to you.”

“You don’t know the panic, son, of having something important to say—something you feel so compelled to get off your chest that it burns—but be unable to get the words out.
